1. What do Smart Plug-ins do?
The rapid shift to an e-commerce economy is driving the introduction of many new applications at an ever faster rate. Customers who try to maintain a 24x7 availability for their online services while maximizing their revenue, are challenged by the complexity and interdependencies of their application and technology infrastructure. The HP OpenView Operations family of products provides the power to put you back in control. HP OpenView Smart Plug-Ins link application monitoring and management with the Operations family to ensure application-quality-of-service.
2. Why is HP OpenView offering the SPI gallery in addition to existing smart plug-ins?
Existing Smart Plug-Ins are aimed at mission critical application, database, and messaging environments. They are available for the established software leaders in each area of the IT infrastructure. In the growing fields of e-commerce and Internet infrastructure, there are few established leaders, and new challengers arise frequently. The SPI Gallery will speed time-to-market of new application management modules. With the Gallery, HP OpenView aims to explode its range of application coverage and reinforce its leadership position for enabling application-quality-of-service.
3. How much do Smart Plug-ins from the SPI gallery cost?
Nothing, they are available as free downloads from the HP OpenView web site.
4. How can you afford to give Smart Plug-ins away for free when other vendors charge for application management capabilities?
HP OpenView's approach is to offer customers a full partnership to solve their IT management challenges. A full partnership means delivering full solutions. Often, customers ask OpenView to manage an application, especially in the e-commerce arena, for which no smart plug-in yet exists. The SPI Gallery extends the HP OpenView Operations capabilities to provide a complete solution to help these customers. Operations offers a powerful and easy platform to develop policies for application monitoring and management. This unique strength allows HP OpenView to offer SPIs for free. Anyone can use the same Operations platform for developing SPIs for their own preferred applications. In the future, HP OpenView will expand the features of the SPI Gallery so that the OpenView customer community can share their SPIs.
5. How do gallery Smart Plug-ins compare to those that are sold by HP OpenView?
SPI Gallery management capabilities include event and process monitoring and some actions (such as restarting application processes). This is the essential functionality to monitor and manage an application from the central OpenView Operations enterprise console. Naturally, more sophisticated functionality and a complete service offering (including support, training, consulting, and ongoing maintenance) is available for the SPIs that HP OpenView sells. For more information visit the web site for HP OpenView Smart Plug-ins.
6. Does HP plan to continue to offer Smart Plug-ins for sale?
Yes. Furthermore, HP OpenView will continue to broaden the range of applications covered, as well as increase the sophistication of existing SPIs.
7. What is your source of expertise to develop Smart Plug-ins for new applications?
HP OpenView works closely with the leading application vendors and HP's alliance labs, thus combining vendors' expertise of the application domain with HP's expertise of management domains.
8. What maintenance will you make to each Smart Plug-in after releases?
HP OpenView will maintain the SPI while there is sufficient interest for compatibility with the latest application and OpenView Operations releases. The biggest factor in determining interest is the number of customers using each SPI. However, HP OpenView reserves the right to decide what level of interest qualifies as sufficient. HP OpenView or the development partner may decide to offer a full SPI for sale in the future. This would then replace the Gallery SPI for managing that application, and a free download and further maintenance would no longer be available.
9. What enhancements will you make to each Smart Plug-in after it releases?
HP OpenView does not plan to significantly increase the functionality of a Gallery SPI once it is released. However, anyone in the SPI Gallery community may make their own functionality enhancements. If these enhancements are offered back to the user community, then HP OpenView will decide whether to add them.
10. What support is available for gallery Smart Plug-ins?
For a description, view the support options.
11. How can I submit feedback to the SPI gallery?

- Requirements that are not addressed with the current software

12. Can I submit enhancements to the gallery SPI software?
